Interested in becoming a Reading Tutor:

Portland Reading Foundation Reading Specialists are Orton Gillingham trained tutors or retired teachers with experience teaching reading at the primary level. Reading Specialists working with PRF must attend a 15 hour training prior to being considered for placement at one of our partner schools. Portland Reading Foundation offers a one week training each August to potential Reading Specialists.

Most of our Reading Specialists tutor two children at a time for 30 minutes per session, and earn $35/hour for instructional time. School schedules are complicated, so it is difficult to pull children for tutoring all day. Therefore, most of our Reading Specialists only work 6-8 hours per week. Sometimes it is possible to assign a Reading Specialist to two schools per week, for a total of 12-16 hours of tutoring per week. Tutoring begins in early October each year and ends in late May.

Volunteer opportunities:

PRF is happy to involve volunteers in our yearly Garden Tour, a fundraiser that supports our programs in the schools. Volunteers are sometimes needed at Family Literacy Nights at the participating schools. These events bring parents and classroom teachers together to educate parents on fun, effective games and materials that can be used at home to promote strong literacy skills.

Portland Reading Foundation does not operate a referral service for Reading Tutors. If you are looking for a Reading Tutor for your child, we recommend that you contact Language Skills Therapy.
